- Minimum 18 years of age
- Valid BC Class 5 driver licence (clean driver abstract)
- Class 3 commercial driver learner licence with air brake endorsement recommended

- Apply directly to Vancouver Island University (VIU) heavy equipment operator admissions
- Submit driver licence abstract and academic transcripts
- Attend an in-person or online program orientation and safety briefing
- Secure CSA-approved safety gear and confirm training start date

⏱ 10–12 Weeks- 10 to 12 weeks of intensive field-based machine training at an active training gravel pit
- Pre-operational machine inspections, diesel engine preventative maintenance, and hydraulic controls
- Civil grade stakes reading, laser level surveying, and soil compaction fundamentals
- Trenching, benching, backfilling, and truck loading on hydraulic excavators and front-end loaders
- WorkSafeBC Part 14 heavy equipment safety rules, ground disturbance, and BC One Call utility safety
