What you need to get in
- Minimum 18 years of age
- Valid Class 3 or Class 1 commercial driver licence with air brakes (clean driver abstract)
- SkilledTradesBC apprentice registration and BC Crane Safety logbook registration
- Pass pre-employment drug and alcohol screening and commercial driver physical assessment
- Valid Class 3 or Class 1 commercial driver licence with air brakes endorsement

How to apply
- Secure employment or union sponsorship with an employer registered with SkilledTradesBC or IUOE Local 115
- Register with BC Crane Safety to receive your official Apprentice Crane Operator Logbook
- Enroll in technical training blocks through the Operating Engineers Training Association (IUOE Local 115 OETA)
- Submit documented crane operating hours and supervisor sign-offs regularly to BC Crane Safety

Mobile crane operator apprenticeship
⏱ 6 Weeks per Level (3 Levels)- 3 levels of technical training (6 weeks each, 18 weeks total) at the IUOE 115 trade school
- Crane mechanics: hydraulic circuits, planetary winches, wire rope reeving, boom hoist cylinders, and carrier frames
- Load chart calculations: quadrant capacities, boom length interpolation, outrigger span deductions, and jib offsets
- Rigging engineering: sling angle tension factors, spreader bars, shackle ratings, and center of gravity calculations
- Site setup and ground stability: timber matting, outrigger float ground bearing pressures, and underground void detection
- Tandem crane hoisting, critical pick safety plans, power line clearance zones, and radio communication
